  1. WUAH 8/13/14-Take a Stand • Burger King’s burgers are better than McDonald’s burgers. • Decide how much you agree with the above statement on a scale from 1-5. 1 is strongly disagree and 5 is strongly agree. • List at least 3 pieces of evidence to support your opinion.

  2. What were the primary motivations for English Colonies?8.1 Explain the primary motivations for English colonization of the New World, including the rise of the middle class, the need to move surplus population, and the search for religious freedom.

  3. Colony • A region or territory controlled by another country

  4. Mercantilism (P. 50) • Based on the practice of mercantilism the American colonies existed for the benefit of the Mother Country. Colonizing America meant that Britain greatly increased its base of wealth.

  5. Joint Stock Company • a company consisting of individuals who invest capital (money) in a business venture together • Granted a charter by King James I in 1606, the Virginia Company was a joint-stock company created to establish settlements in the New World. • The Virginia Company established the colony of Jamestown.

  6. Indentured Servant • a voluntary or involuntary labor system whereby people paid for their passage to the New World by working for an employer for a certain number of years.

  7. List and describe possible reasons people move to new, unfamiliar places.

  8. Economic • Wealthy business men sought opportunities to invest their money. • The economic theory of mercantilism stressed the need of a nation to accumulate gold, silver and land as a means of wealth and power.

  9. Economic • There was a need for markets for England’s surplus of manufactured goods. • Lower class wanted the opportunity to make a better living.

  10. Social • Rise of the middle class. (joint stock companies) • Place to dump poor people and criminals. • Desire for adventure

  11. Religious • Those who chose not to conform to the Anglican church were persecuted by the government. • Those who were persecuted sought to escape to America so that they could worship freely. • Wanted to take religion to the Native Americans.
