The Third Sector Research Capacity Building Cluster • Based in 3 universities (Goldsmiths, Lincoln and MMU) – funded by ESRC & Barrow Cadbury Trust for 5 years • To provide research studentships, placements, vouchers and KTPs with Third Sector organisations & groups • A unique opportunity, despite challenges BUT the funding is running out in 2013

Current challenges for community-university research • Universities face massive funding cuts BOTH for teaching AND research (with further cuts in 2012 with £9000 fees) • Already adult, continuing and community education and outreach has been cut back/ eliminated in many universities along with cuts to widening participation • Universities committed to outreach/ partnerships may be disproportionately affected

Opportunities for coming period • Both in Britain (e.g. CUPP, Brighton & in Cluster) and internationally, there is still evidence of partnership working and commitment (with global networks) • Universities DO still need to demonstrate commitment to communities & to ‘research impact’ • And students increasingly seek opportunities for research projects & placements (to improve employability in difficult times) • When well supervised & supported they can provide valuable research inputs to communities

In summary • Pressures on universities & colleges are increasing & can be expected to increase further • But there are still opportunities for developing community-university partnerships further • As contributions today will demonstrate, if well supported, these partnerships can strengthen Third Sector organisations’ abilities to survive change and make change, with evidence demonstrating the value of what they do AND evidence upon which to develop their own strategies for survival and change
