  1. Three Mile Island

  2. What Happened and When? • March 28, 1979 • The Plant experienced a failure in the secondary, non-nuclear section of the plant. (Mechanical or Electrical failure) Steam generators couldn’t remove heat and the reactor automatically shut down. And pressure on the nuclear part to the plant began to increase, a valve opened to release pressure but didn’t close. Then there became no way for cooling water to pour out so the reactor overheated.

  3. What were the important contaminates/people involved in the event • 2 Million people in the surrounding area received a dosage of radiation of about 1 millirem (practically nothing in comparison to everyday life) • People involved include: Power plant workers and governmental agencies responsible for cleaning/monitoring the area.

  4. What were the consequences of the event, in terms of the reaction to it? • Upgraded plant design, equipment. • Monitored human performance in the plant. • Improved Instruction. • Enhanced emergency procedures. • Regular analysis of plant by NRC
