DOMAINS • 3 domains: • BACTERIA • ARCHAEA • EUKARYA • Classified into domains based on cell type and structure
DOMAIN BACTERIA • Include bacteria (Kingdom Bacteria also) • PROKARYOTIC (PRO=NO) • Survive in many environments • Aerobic and Anaerobic • Autotrophic and Heterotrophic • Most abundant organism • More bacteria on your body right now than people in the world
DOMAIN ARCHAEA • Possibly older than bacteria but more closely related to eukaryotes • Autotrophic and Heterotrophic • EXTREMOPHILES: live in extreme environments • Ex. Boiling hot springs, salty lakes, thermal vents on the oceans floor, mud of marshes where there is no O2
DOMAIN EUKARYA • All eukaryotic organisms • Contains Kingdoms: Protista, Fungi, Plantae, Animalia
KINGDOM PROTISTA • Eukaryotic organisms • Can be unicellular, multicellular, or colonial • Do not have organs • “JUNK DRAWER” if it doesn’t fit neatly somewhere else, it gets put here • Plant like: algae, autotrophic • Animal like: Protozoans, heterotrophic • Fungus like: slime molds and mildews
KINGDOM FUNGI • Unicellular or multicellular • Absorbs nutrients from organic materials in its environment • Heterotrophic • Lack mobility • Contain HYPHAE: threadlike filaments that are used for growth, feeding, reproduction
KINGDOM PLANTAE • Multicellular • Mostly Autotrophic • Some heterotrophic (ex. Parasitic dodder) • Organized tissues • Lack motility
KINGDOM ANIMALIA • Multicellular • Eukaryotic • Heterotrophic • Organized tissues • Most are mobile, some exceptions
VIRUSES • Nucleic acid surrounded by a protein coat • Do not possess cells and are not cells • Not considered living • NOT IN THE CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM • Have their own classification
