How you can help your child to progress in reading • Questions to ask your child when listening to them read • These questions will help them look for and gain a deeper understanding of the text • Describe what a character is feeling/thinking about at a certain part of the story. • Summarise the blurb for the back of the book • Evaluate thesuccess of figurative language and imagery in the text. This means how the author describes to put an image in our heads. • Jot down some words that you find hard to read or don’t understand. Look up their meanings in a dictionary. • Think about the text you have just read. Explain in detailed sentences what your best part in the story has been. • What is the setting of the story. • Think of 5 questions you would like to ask the author and explain why you have chosen them.

(if relevant to text). • Comment on how the text is written and presented, including dialogue (speech). • Pick a descriptive word from the book; use a thesaurus to find 5 synonyms (similar word) and 5 antonyms (words with an opposite meaning) for the word. • How many examples of similes or metaphors can you find in this text? Think of 3 of your own that could be used to describe something in the book. • Describe the plot of the story. • Think of an alternative ending for your story. • Describe the main character in the text. Identify their appearance, personality, dress, attitudes, beliefs and behaviour. • Would you recommend your book to another? • Make a prediction on what you think will happen next in the text. • Identify pieces of the text that grab your attention and explain how they are powerful/ interesting to you. • Read 3 different blurbs and make a decision as to what book you would prefer to read. • Think about some of the books you have enjoyed. Think about the authors of these books. Are they the same?
