  1. Welcome to Year 5

  2. Staff • Miss Lacey and Mr Shore – Year 5 Class Teachers • Mrs Ryan – Year 5 Teaching Assistant • Mrs Marray – Support teacher for guided group work • Mrs Lamb – Retired teacher who supports children with reading

  3. General Class Information • An attendance award will be given to the junior class that has the highest percentage attendance each week. • School starts at 8:55 am. Any children coming into school after 9:00 am will be given a late mark. • Appointments can be made to see your child’s class teacher straight after school (except Wednesday due to staff meetings.) This is a more convenient time for teachers rather than in the morning when the children are coming into school. • Dinner money is collected on a Monday morning. It would be helpful if this was in an envelope labelled with your child’s name. We would encourage children to stay on either a packed lunch or school meal for half a term if possible. • Thank you for maintaining the high standards in school uniform, all the children look very smart.

  4. Reading • Children will complete weekly guided reading sessions. Focussing on skills such as: comprehension, questioning, key features of different texts and authors use of language. • Every child will have a home reading book. • They will be expected to read 15 pages per week or more if they wish. • This will be monitored every two weeks. The children can independently change their book when needed. • It would be helpful if your child read aloud to an adult and answered questions about the book to ensure full understanding however there may be times when children want to read independently. • Please sign and date your child’s bookmark when they have read 15 pages or when they require a new book. • Children will be asked to read books of different genres. They can also take books from the class library home throughout the year to encourage reading for enjoyment.

  5. Homework • Please complete in either blue pen or pencil. • 30 minutes to be spent on each piece of homework. • If after 30 minutes your child is finding their homework particularly difficult sign it and their class teacher can address any difficulties. • If circumstances prevent the completion of homework a letter from a parent will excuse the child. The homework task may be set for another evening. • Parents are to sign each piece of homework to ensure it has been checked. • You may wish to show your child alternative calculation methods to solve Maths work, this would be acceptable.

  6. English • English Spelling homework will be given out on Tuesday along with a set of spellings. • Homework is due in the following Tuesday. • A spelling test will take place on the following Tuesday. • On most occasions, homework will be linked to spellings but sometimes a different Literacy task may be given instead.

  7. Maths • Maths homework will be given on Friday and should be completed by the following Monday. This could be in the form of a Maths Activity Sheet or ‘My Maths’ to be completed on the computer. www.mymaths.co.uk Login: hrcps Password: triangle • The children will be given a times table activity every Monday.

  8. P.E. • The children will have P.E. twice a week on a Thursday and Friday • The children will need their full P.E. kit in school on both days. • The Friday lesson (up until Christmas) will be Games and will take place outside. Children will be able to wear trainers for these lesson and during the Winter time tracksuits can be worn over P.E. kits. • P.E. Kits must remain in school and are to be taken home every half term holiday to be washed. • Please ensure P.E. kits a returned on the first day of a new half term.

  9. Project • The children will be asked to complete a written project during the Spring Term. • More information will be given at a later date.

  10. Music • Children in Year 5 have the opportunity to learn how to play a musical instrument. • Instruments will be taken home every Tuesday for the children to practise. • Instruments must be returned to school the following Tuesday.

  11. Forest School • This term children in Year 5 have been chosen to experience a series of exciting outdoor learning sessions called ‘Forest School.’ • The forest school session will take place at a site in Roughley’s Woods in Lunt. • The types of activities include: environmental art, shelter building, bush craft skills, story telling, plant identification, outdoor cooking and lighting fires. • On Wednesday 18th September children will have an introduction to Forest School through a photo presentation. There will also be a training session for volunteers in the morning. • Two parent helpers are needed to make this activity possible.

  12. How you can help • Ensure completion of all homework. • Test what has been learnt. • Listen to your child read what they have written. • Encourage reading for enjoyment. • Promote independent research. • Practise of times tables. • Practise of weekly spellings.
