  3. Odysseus • Main character in The Odyssey • King of Ithaca • Husband of Penelope and Father of Telemachus • Hero in the Greek and Trojan War • It takes him 10 years to return home to Ithaca • He goes through many trials in order to return home. Main menu

Penelope • The wife of Odysseus • While Odysseus is gone she remains faithful to him, even though everyone is telling her that he is dead and not coming back • Believing her husband will return she makes a tapestry to keep the suitors away showing that she is still faithful to Odysseus Main menu

  5. Athena • Goddess of Wisdom • She helps Odysseus on his journey home • She disguises him so that he can safely enter his home without being noticed as himself and get rid of all the suitors that have taken advantage of his home and family Main menu

  6. Calypso • Nymph from the island of Ogygia • She enchants Odysseus by singing to him • She gets him to stay on the island with her for seven years • She wanted to make him her immortal husband • She releases Odysseus on Zeus’s orders Main menu

  7. Telemachus • The son of Odysseus and Penelope • He tries to defend his mother from the suitors while his father is gone • He doesn’t believe his father died • He goes on a journey to gain information about his father • When Odysseus returns Telemachus helps him kill the suitors Main Menu

  8. Polyphemus • Son of Poseidon • The first monster Odysseus comes in contact with • He keeps Odysseus and his men prisoner in his cave • Each day he eats some of Odysseus’s men • Odysseus eventually blinds Polyphemus and tricks him to escape from the cave Main menu

Poseidon • God of the Sea • Father of Polyphemus • He helped Odysseus in the Trojan War • He is angered by Odysseus for what he had done to his son and for not making a sacrifice to him after the Trojan War • He sends winds and storms to throw Odysseus off course and keep him from returning home Main menu

  10. Scylla • Lives on the opposite side of Charybdis in the Strait of Messina • Sea monster with six heads • This is the second monster that Odysseus comes in contact with • Odysseus goes with Scylla first because he would rather lose six men than his entire crew and ship Main menu

  11. Charybdis • Gigantic whirlpool monster in the Strait of Messina • This is the last monster that Odysseus comes in contact with • Charybdis swallows larges amounts of water and Odysseus’s ship along with the rest of his crew Main menu
