  1. Atom Interferometer Gyroscope James Greenberg University of Arizona Physics

  2. Motivation: Precision Inertial Measurements From http://marsrover.nasa.gov/ Navigation http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/gpb/ Test General Relativity From http://www.jhartfound.org/ Reproduced from Jentschet al. Gen. Relativ. Gravit. (2004)

  3. Atom Interference Fringes Atom Beam 1G 3G 2G p = grating period =

  4. Measurements: Phase and Contrast Atom Beam V 1G 3G 2G

  5. Dispersion  Contrast Loss 1G 2G 3G Velocity Distribution large

  6. Dispersion Compensation Measured Contrast vs. Change in Phase

  7. Sagnac Phase (Shift) Reproduced from Lenef et al. PRL (1997) From http://www.physicalgeography.net/ = Rotation Rate L = grating separation p = grating period = 73rad/s 2.4rad shift

  8. Sagnac Phase (Shift) Reproduced from Lenef et al. PRL (1997) From http://www.physicalgeography.net/ = Rotation Rate L = grating separation p = grating period = 73rad/s 2.4rad shift

  9. Acceleration Phase (Shift) z x y L 3G 2G = Board tilt angle L = grating separation p = grating period 1G 1 board tilt  4 radian phase shift

  10. Model and Results -20 mrad -1.15 10% uncertainty

  11. Earth Rotation Rate If board tilt assumed to be -20 mrad, then: 73 rad/s 13% Uncertainty

  12. Summary of Work • Determined inertial phase shifts from C() for multiple beam conditions • Modeled C() data to fit measured • Measured board tilt and Earth rotation rate codependently with 10% and 13% precision respectively
