Title Plant Health Management Program (PHMP) Goal Poverty alleviation and sustainable management of agricultural resources, through enhanced ecological stability and agricultural productivity by developing durable pest management options (CGIAR Research Priorities 2005-2015, priority 4d, p 65)

  3. Outputs • Characterization [RxxxxxD] • 1. knowledge base on distribution and biology of pests and their natural enemies improved • 2. interactions between pests, host plants, natural enemies and the environment elucidated

  4. Outputs • Developing control options[RxxxxxD] • efficient biological control available • effective host-plant resistance available • effective habitat management available • 6. biopesticides developed towards commercialization

  6. Highlights for 2004: Characterization Fruit fly Bactrocera invadens Citrus fruit: Southern Benin Guava fruit: Togo and Cameroon Papaya, passion fruit, mango: Benin,Cameroon and Togo

Highlights for 2004: Developing control options Resistance to black streak of banana • Field evaluations require long time • Priority: development of an early screening method • Earlier methods used detached leaves, tissue culture plants, and cell cultures using toxins • Young plants in tissue culture and in bags offer good opportunity for early screening

  9. Highlights for 2004: Developing control options • A proposal for a second phase is being written. Proposed activities are: • Further work on dose rate (down to 12.5 g/ha) and mixtures with chemical insecticides. • Large-scale application of Nosema locustae. • Study into release of exotic Scelio sp. • Extension of capacity building to other Sahelian countries. • Validation of and training in GIS decision support tool.
