  3. Spanish Settle Texas • Original inhabitants of Texas: Native Americans • Spain: Claimed Texas based upon explorations in 1500’s: Did not settle • 1689: Spanish discover fort, start to settle Texas

  4. Mission System • Mission: small settlements designed to convert Native Americans to Catholicism and make them loyal Spanish subjects • 1600-1700: 24 missions set up • Most Native Americans: Reject missions

  5. Turn Books to page 303 • Read paragraph titled “The Mission System Ends” • Answer the following question in your notes: Why did the Mission System End?
