  1. Adolescence & Physical Education • Growth in weight & height accelerate rapidly • Girls begin their spurt earlier, but boys ‘catch up’ quickly • Males become stronger and increase the amt. Of muscle tissue, whereas females increase the % of body fat……implications for tchg.?

  2. Adolescence • Physical Maturity--compare chronological age with skeletal age (rate of ossification of the bones a strong indicator of maturity • Early-maturing Ss are generally heavier and taller for their age; note too that obese children are often more mature than their normal weight peers--implications for teachers?

  3. Physical Activity & Growth • Activity affects skeletal growth--vigorous activity can improve internal bone structure; they increase in size & density • Inactivity for prolonged periods cause demineralization--prone to fractures • Even though activity enhances skeletal density, does not appear to affect rate of maturity

  4. Weight Control • Body composition refers to one’s % body fat--can check using skinfold measurements • Obesity decreases aerobic performance and can also has a negative impact on motor performance--a difficult cycle for many • Physical activity can can be a critical factor in dealing with weight control…Implications?

  5. Skill Level & Physical Education • Ss who feel incompetent--quit!; these people, as adults have negative feelings toward physical activity…Why can this be a problem for physical educators? • Cannot predict how young students will ‘turn out,’ so we need to keep our Ss enthusiastic • Remember, p.e. goal is not to produce athletes

  6. Intellectual Devel’t & P.E. • Physical activity does not make one ‘smarter’--does make one better prepared to handle the rigors of academic endeavors • Trois Rivieres exp’t--> p.e. and< academics did not decrease academic performance • How can a teacher’s knowledge of cognitive development impact p.e. program?

  7. Characteristics of Adolescents & Developmentally Appropriate Activity ID characteristics of: Intellectual Development Physical Development Psychological Development Social Development Moral & Ethical Development What are the implications for p.e.?
