  1. Chapter 6 Atmosphere APES

  2. Atmosphere Invisble layer of gases that envelope Earth http://www.vtaide.com/png/atmosphere.htm

  3. Gases in Atmosphere

  4. Function of Atmosphere • Trap heat = warm planet • Protect us from incoming UV, x-ray, cosmic radiation • Without gases  no warming  no life

  5. Layers of Atmosphere • http://www.hippocampus.org/AP%20Environmental%20Science • Troposphere – closest to surface • contains weather and storm events • Contains most clouds • Stratosphere – steady wind present • Commercial jets fly here • Contains protective ozone layer ~ good ozone

  6. Mesophere – lower temps • Literally means middle sphere • Thermosphere – rising temps • Gases absorb UV radiation and become very active (KMT) thus increasing temps found here • Aurora- lights in dark polar skies produced when charged particles from sun HIT oxygen or nitrogen molecule • Satellites found here, important communication zone

  7. Exosphere – this air converges with space

  8. Weather vs. Climate • What is wrong with the following statement? • Global warming cannot be occurring, we had a very cool summer.

  9. How does a tornado form?

  10. Hurricanes, Cyclones, and Typhoons – OH MY! VIDEO link • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM-abtIT6Is

  11. How does the sun warm planet Earth? • GIANT CONVECTION CURRENT

  12. What is wind? • Horizontal movements of air resulting from changes in atm pressure + rotation of Earth • Blow from HIGH atm pressure to LOW atm pressure • http://www.hippocampus.org/AP%20Environmental%20Science

  13. What is the Coriolis Effect? • Air/water currents are deflected due to rotation • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcPs_OdQOYU • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wda7azMvabE&feature=related
