  2. Figures of speech • An expression that creates an image in your mind

  3. Literal Language:The actual, dictionary definition of a word; language that means what it appears to mean

  4. Figurative Language: • Language used in a special way to create a special effect • Example: “Put your heads together”

  5. Simile:Comparison of 2 unlike things using like or as • Example: “His hoof beats were like miniature thunder”

  6. Metaphor • A comparison between two unlike things not using like or as • Example: “Morning is a new sheet of paper to write on”

  7. Personification • Giving human traits to inanimate objects, animals, or feelings. • Example: “The sun smiled on the happy walkers”

  8. Rhyme • Repetition of the SAME sounds • Example: hat and cat

  9. Rhyme Scheme • The pattern of end rhyme marked by letters • Example: ABBA

  10. Repetition • Repeating a word or lines in a poem • Example: • “And miles to go before I sleep And miles to go before I sleep”

  11. Refrain • The repetition of one or more lines or phrases in a poem (like a chorus of a song)

  12. Alliteration • The repetition of the first sound or letter in two or more words. This is done for effect. • Example: “Slithery Snake”

  13. Onomatopoeia • The sound of a word matches its meaning • Example: “snap, crackle, pop”

  15. Imagery • Word or phrase that appeals to the senses and creates a picture in the mind. • Example: “The fluffy white clouds resembled cotton candy, as they slow drifted through the summer sky.”

  16. Rhythm • The pattern determined by accented and unaccented syllables; the beat • Example: “I wandered lonely as a cloud”
