In 1921, Hitler formed the National Socialists Workers Party (Nazis) - he wanted to gain support both from the workers and the nationalists • Hitler promised the German people he would restore what the country lost after WWI specifically land and power • In 1923, The Nazi Party organized an attempt to seize power –The Beer Hall Putsch– and Hitler was arrested and thrown in prison • While in prison, Hitler wrote Mein Kampf (My Struggle) – expressed his hatred of Jews (anti-Semitism) • The Nazi party was known for the use of symbols to show support such as flags, badges, uniforms • When in power the Nazi party had its own armed force known as the SA – Storm troopers and also controlled the media (i.e. newspapers and radio)

In July of 1932, an election was held in Germany the Nazi Party won 230 seats making them the largest party in the Reichstag • Although, the Nazi Party formed a minority government and Hitler was reluctantly appointed as Chancellor after two elections by President Hindenburg • On Feb 27, 1933, a fire broke out in the Reichstag, as a result of the crisis, Hitler suspended all civil rights • Reichstag Fire Decree of 28 February, which suspended basic rights and allowed detention without trial • By March 1933, Hitler assumed total control of Germany and became Chancellor

The Swastika • The meaning of the word swastika means “to be good”, widely used in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism or “being with higher self ” • was used on the party's flag, badge, and armband. • In 1933, a right-facing and rotated swastika was incorporated into the Nazi party flag, which was made the state flag of Germany during Nazism
