  1. DBQ – IB Style

  2. General Tips • IB is not worried about thesis statements. Get to the point quickly. A topic sentence would be helpful. • The questions are completely separate. DO NOT try to link them together with transitions. • Read the question carefully and give what is being asked. No extra points are given for information that does not relate to the question! • Use the “marks” as a guide for how long each answer should be. MARKS = POINTS!

  3. Placing documents in context “These questions relate to the struggle for leadership after the death of Lenin.” • Simple enough. This is what your are dealing with on this DBQ. All questions relate to it. Your answer will relate to it.

  4. 1. a) Why, according to source A, did Lenin think that Stalin should be removed from his position of General Secretary? [3 marks](b) What message is conveyed by Source E? [2 marks] • Answer each question individually! • Do not try to tie the two together. • Begin with a topic sentence to identify the question, but don’t worry about an entire intro paragraph.

  5. ONLY discuss the sources mentioned in the question. DO NOT bring in others. Be sure to discuss similarities AND differences!!! 2. Compare and contrast the views expressed about Stalin in Sources A and B. [6 marks]

  6. 3. With reference to their origin and purpose, assess the value and limitation for historians studying the struggle for leadership, of Source C and D. [6 marks] • Origin & Purpose: Where, when, who, why • Value: How can this document benefit historians studying the time period • Limitation: How does this document restrict the historians understanding. • Only address the documents mentioned in the question!

  7. 4. Using these sources and your own knowledge, explain to what extent you agree with the assertion that Stalin was able to become leader after the death of Lenin because of Trotsky’s weaknesses. [8 marks] • Make sure to draw on your knowledge • Support with information from ALL of the other sources. • This is worth more points; therefore, plan to spend more time!!!
