What is the IB Diploma Programme? • The Diploma Programme begins during a student’s junior year • Over the two years of the programme, students must take a total of 6 IB courses. • The programme is designed as a holistic, cross-curricular course of study • 3 IB courses are taken at the Higher Level • 3 IB courses are taken at the Standard Level

  3. What is the IB Diploma Programme? (cont.) • Higher Level courses require 250 hours of instruction and are taught over two years. Currently at Richwoods, we offer HL History, Biology, English, and Math • Standard Level courses require 150 hours of instruction and can be taught in one year or over two years. Currently at Richwoods, we offer SL Spanish and French, Math Studies, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, and Music.

  5. What is the IB Diploma Programme? (again) • In addition to the 6 required courses, IB students must also complete the following… * Creativity - Action - Service * the Extended Essay * Theory of Knowledge

What Are the Benefits of the IB Diploma Programme? • The Diploma Programme prepares students for the challenges of college. • Nearly every college and university in the U.S. recognizes IB courses for credits. • Students are assessed in IB courses on a scale of 1-7, most schools will give credit for scores of 5,6, and 7.

  7. The IB Diploma Programme is challenging, but you can participate and still have a life! Pre-IB and IB students are involved in nearly every sport, activity, and club at Richwoods.

  8. College Credits for IB Courses With a score of 4, Florida State University will grant course credit for the standard class offering in each IB subject offered at Richwoods. A score of 5,6, or 7 will earn course credit for a higher level class in that subject http://admissions.fsu.edu/credit/ibcredit.cfm

With a score of 5 or higher, The University of Missouri will grant credit hours for the following IB courses offered at Richwoods: English HL – 6 hours French and Spanish SL – 3 hours History HL – 5 hours Psychology SL – 3 hours Biology HL – 5 hours (with a score of 4) Chemistry SL – 3 hours Mathematics SL – 5 hours http://admissions.missouri.edu/apply/ap-ib-and-college-credits/international-baccalaureate-diploma-certificates.php

What do students do during their freshmen/sophomore years? • 9th and 10th graders who are on track to enter the Diploma Programme are classified as “pre-IB”. • “Pre-IB” is not actually a formal program, but rather a preparatory course of study. • Pre-IB students are required to take a challenging slate of enriched level classes in the core subjects, as well as government/economics during their freshman year and AP European History their sophomore year.

Pre-IB (continued) • Pre-IB students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to remain in the IB track. • Outside of academics, pre-IB students (just like Diploma students) are encouraged to become involved in athletics or other extra-curricular activities at Richwoods. • They are also made aware of, and are encouraged to take part in the community volunteering opportunities in which the Diploma students participate.

The Richwoods IB Application Process • Access an IB application at your middle school or via the IB page on the Richwoods website • Turn in the application to your middle school counselor (if in D150) or send directly to Richwoods High School attn: IB coordinator • The Application deadline in January 25, 2013

  15. Application Process (cont.) • Interviews will be conducted on February 19th and 20th • Applicants will be notified of their status via letter in early March
