  1. Understanding the Death of Christ for Us 1 Peter 3:18-22

  2. 1 Peter 3:18 • 18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

  3. 1 Peter 3:19-20 • 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; • 20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.

  4. 1 Peter 3:21-22 • 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism does also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: • 22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

  5. Understand Why He Died vs. 18 • He suffered once for sin • His atonement was complete at the cross • He was the only One who could die for us • He was our substitution • His suffering accomplished God’s will • Only His body died • He was resurrected on the third day….never to die again

  6. Where did Jesus go while His body was dead? • Jesus did not go to hell to suffer for our sins • Jesus told us that He was going to paradise

  7. Luke 23:42-43 • 42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. • 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

  8. Where did Jesus go while His body was dead? • Jesus did not go to hell to suffer for our sins • Jesus told us that He was going to paradise • Paradise is identified with Abraham’s bossom

  9. Eph. 4:8-10 • 8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. • 9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? • 10 He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)

  10. What did Jesus preach? • We need to understand who the spirits were in verse 19 • It was not a message of salvation. • Euangelidzo • Kerruso • It was a divine proclamation

  11. Rev. 1:18 • “I am he that lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and death.”
