  2. Reason for the Study Through working with Deaf children and adults, it seems as though very few know a second sign language. Even more importantly, many Deaf children don’t seem to realize that sign language is not universal. Survey is a first step to quantify that observation. A second step is to address the problem, if in fact it is true that students don’t know a foreign sign language. The rationale for learning a foreign sign language is the same as learning a second spoken language for hearing students – cultural enrichment, enhanced travel experiences, connection with other population groups, etc. Shari Shari NTID – Rochester - 2010
