  1. What is abstinence? • The conscious decision not to participate in sexual activity of any kind

  2. How can you benefit by remaining abstinent? • Are NOT at risk of: • Getting pregnant • Being infected with a sexually transmitted disease • Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) • An infectious disease that is spread by sexual contact Do you need to have sexual intercourse to contract a STD?

  3. Emotional Benefits of Abstinence • Being free from worry and stress about STDs and pregnancy • Allowing time to develop the maturity to make important decisions • Avoiding being manipulated by others • Having an increased sense of self-control and self-respect • Staying true to your values

  4. Social Benefits of Abstinence • Freedom to pursue a variety of friendships • Less complicated relationships • Better relationships with parents • Chance to learn to build strong, lasting relationships based on mutual trust and respect • Better reputation among peers
