  1. PROVERBS 14

  2. ETHICS - PROVERBS • ETHICS – the study of: • Moral values • Good or bad…worth • Moral duties • Right or wrong…ought • PROVERBS – the study of • God’s moral values • Good or bad…worth • God’s moral duties • Right or wrong…ought

  3. Creator – creation Distinction For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Col 1:16-17 One Triune Creator Personal Sovereign God Independent Infinite Authority REVELATION Creation Dependent Finite Submissive

  4. PROVERBS 14:1 • The wisest of women builds her house, but folly with her own hands tears it down. • The wife’s character can make or break a home. • Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Proverbs 31:30 • What is your effect on your home?

  5. PROVERBS 14:2 • Whoever walks in uprightness fears the LORD, but he who is devious in his ways despises him. • “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. John 14:15 • How you live exposes what you believe. • What does your life say to others?

  6. PROVERBS 14:3 • By the mouth of a fool comes a rod for his back, but the lips of the wise will preserve them. • The fool is his own worst enemy. • Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29

  7. PROVERBS 14:5 • A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness breathes out lies. • God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it? Numbers 23:19 • God’s ethics come from God’s character. • Is your character like God’s?

  8. PROVERBS 14:6-7 • A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding. Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of knowledge. • Epistemology: the study of knowledge • God’s revelation is absolute universal truth. • The preconditions for knowledge (laws of logic, uniformity of the universe, reliability of our senses, reliable memory, and a moral standard) require Christianity to be true.

  9. PROVERBS 14:9 • Fools mock at the guilt offering, but the upright enjoy acceptance. • Sorrow, confession, repentance, and trust in Jesus Christ as your guilt offering is required for acceptance from God. • Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. 2 Corinthians 5:20-21

  10. PROVERBS 14:11-12 • The house of the wicked will be destroyed, but the tent of the upright will flourish. There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death. • Not the size of the house, but the character of the people. • “Natural” way vs. God’s instructions. • For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

  11. PROVERBS 14:14 • The backslider in heart will be filled with the fruit of his ways, and a good man will be filled with the fruit of his ways. • You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Matthew 7:16 • Your character determines your life choices. • What do your life choices say about your character?

  12. PROVERBS 14:15-16 • The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps. One who is wise is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool is reckless and careless. • Who and what do you believe? • So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good. 1 Peter 2:1-3

  13. PROVERBS 14:17,29-30 • A man of quick temper acts foolishly, and a man of evil devices is hated. Whoever is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who has a hasty temper exalts folly. A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot. • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24 • Christ followers replace their temper with patience and self-control, and replace their evil plans and envy with peace, kindness and goodness. Have you?

  14. PROVERBS 14:20-21 • The poor is disliked even by his neighbor, but the rich has many friends. Whoever despises his neighbor is a sinner, but blessed is he who is generous to the poor. • For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and any other commandment, are summed up in this word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Romans 13:9-10 • How do you treat people?

  15. PROVERBS 14:22 • Don’t those who plan evil go astray? But those who plan good find loyalty and faithfulness. • Your destiny depends on your goal. • Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for God’s glory. 1 Corinthians 10:31 • What is the goal of your life?

  16. PROVERBS 14:26-27 • In the fear of the LORD one has strong confidence, and his children will have a refuge. The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death. • Awe, reverence, respect, and love for the LORD has blessings for you and others now and for eternity. • Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:14,16

  17. PROVERBS 14:31 • Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him. • So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Genesis 1:27 • How you treat people either insults or honors the LORD. • Do you allow yourself to insult God?

  18. PROVERBS 14:32 • The wicked is overthrown through his evildoing, but the righteous finds refuge in his death. • And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:11-13 • If you died today would you have eternal life with the Lord Jesus Christ in heaven?
