  2. Bell-ringer 9/21 • How does the culture and community of early German, Irish, English and African ancestors still resonate in the 21st Century? In music, neighborhoods, food, etc.?

  3. During the 1600s, about 90% of migrants to the English colonies were from England. • What do you think were some reasons why people left England? • ___________ and _____________ turmoil • High unemployment and low wages

The Scots and Scotch-Irish • In 1707 Great Britain was formed by the union of England, Wales and Scotland • 250,000 Scotch-Irish people came during the 1700s • Many moved west to the Pennsylvania and Carolinas to the “back country” • How does early Scotch-Irish heritage still resonate today in the United States?

  5. The Germans • Push and Pull Factors • Push: They felt pushed by war, taxes, and religious persecution. • Pull: William Penn recruited Germans to settle in Pennsylvania. • German immigrants could obtain a farm 6 times larger than a typical peasant holding in Germany.

  6. Africans and Transported to America • Slaves, in the early 1600s, were treated like indentured servants. • What's the difference? • As years progressed, it was more custom to treat all Africans like slaves. • English associated the color of black with darkness and evil. • They stamped different appearance, behavior and customs of Africans as “savagery”. • Why do you think they did this??

  7. The Transatlantic Slave Trade • The Middle Passage: shippers carried the enslaved Africans across the Atlantic to the American colonies. • 1 in 7 passengers did not survive the journey.
