Support NOAA Ecosystem & Climate Mission Goals
Cooperative effort – inter-line office and inter-agency From NOAA’s Strategic Plan: Updated for FY2005 – FY2010:
Here are two Ecosystem Mission Goal Performance Objectives supported by this project:
1) Increase number of regional coastal and marine ecosystems delineated with approved indicators of ecological health and socioeconomic benefits that are monitored and understood.
2) Increase number of habitat acres conserved or restored.
Here is a Climate Mission Goal Performance Objective supported by this project:
1) Understand and predict the consequences of climate variability and change on marine ecosystems.
Cooperative effort:
1) NOAA/NOS (National Marine Sanctuary Program)
2) NOAA/NESDIS (NOAA Library and National Oceanographic Data Center)
3) U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge)From NOAA’s Strategic Plan: Updated for FY2005 – FY2010:

3. Beach Watch Program
Long-term beach monitoring program operating within GFNMS
Understand effects of oil spills, ENSO, beach erosion and deposition etc. on ecosystem
Surveys on 35mm color slides: 55 beaches every month since 1993
Common Murre Restoration Project
Aerial surveys of seabird nesting colonies within U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and GFNMS
Determine efficacy of restoration of colonies after a 1986, 1997/8,& 2002 oil spills and aid in planning future restoration efforts and emergency response
Surveys on 35mm color slides: Since 1986
California Kelp Resources Project
Aerial surveys of kelp canopy extent within MBNMS
Understand effects of ENSO events, climate change, and extraction, etc. on kelp beds
Surveys on 70mm color-infrared: 1999 & 2000 Overview of Surveys — Continuation of Task Order L-24 GFNMS = Gulf of Farallones National Marine Sanctuary
ENSO = El Nino – Southern OscillationGFNMS = Gulf of Farallones National Marine Sanctuary

Scanning and archiving of this collection is COMPLETE!
NODC published online via the NODC Ocean Archive all images and documentation for Common Murre Restoration Project’s survey slides taken during 1996, 1997, and 1998

HOV scanned 3,216 Beach Watch slides creating 21 DVDs and 314 photo log sheets creating one DVD with JPEG/TIFF images and delivered them to GFNMS and NODC
HOV scanned 4,897 Common Murre slides creating 43 DVDs with JPEG/TIFF images and delivered to SFBNWR and NODC
NODC updated metadata, compliant with FGDC standards
FY09 Accomplishments — Continuation of Task Order L-24
5. Custodians ship their slides to contractor (Beach Watch: ship 15 – 20K slides out of ~80K remaining; Common Murre: ship ~1K slides out of ~17K remaining)
Contractor scans slides and create JPEG and archival TIFF images
TIFF (uncompressed; 3K pixels long dimension for BW, 4K for Common Murre)
JPEG (web-distribution; 600 pixels across long dimension)
24-bit RGB
Contractor scans slide log sheets and create archival TIFF images
Contractor creates DVD-R (one copy for custodian & one for NODC)
Scope of Work for FY2010 — Continuation of Task Order L-24
6. Time Estimates
Originators ship slides to contractor: Beach Watch 4 months and Common Murre 2 months
QA: Beach Watch 6 months and Common Murre 1 month
