  1. Marine and coastal remote sensing Algeria national capabilities The ALSAT microsatellite programme

  2. Computer technology, Information networks, improvements in sensing systems for satellites. Remote sensing are becoming a cost-effective techniques

  3. Satellite imagery can used for observing marine features such as: • large-scale circulation, currents, • river outflow and water quality. This can be visualized by highlighting variations in water color and/or temperature.

  4. These observations can be used for activities such as • environmental monitoring of sensitive coastal zones, • hazards assessment, and • management of fishing fleets.

  5. Small satellites are enabling developing countries to acces space technology • AlSat-1 (Algerian Satellite), an enhanced microsatellite is Algeria's first national satellite. • It has been designed and constructed by SSTL (Surrey Space Technology Laboratory) at the Surrey Space Centre (UK). • ALSAT-1 is part of an international collaboration of Earth observation satellites specifically designed for disaster monitoring, called Disaster Monitoring Constellation – DMC-.

  6. ALSAT-1 CARACTERISTICS Earth observationMicrosatellite Size: 60 x 60 x 60 cm Mass: 90 kg Lifetime: 5 years Launch Date : 28 Novembre 2002 (Plesetsk Cosmodrome, Russia) Orbit: 680 km (sun-synchronous) Inclination: 98.1° Time : 9h30 Operated by: CNTS (Centre National des Techniques spatiales)

  24. Conclusion • Alsat-1 products are free of charge for the marine science community and to the end users • Alsat-1 products along with products of other satellites of the DMC will be used as part of the national marine information database. • marine science community is actively participating in the calibration of Alsat-2 senors
