Research Presentation Preparation Guidelines for ALERT Method

This slide set provides instructions and standardization tips for preparing research presentations using the ALERT method. It includes guidelines on choosing between PICO and SPIDER templates based on the research type, details on structuring the presentation slides, defining research questions for quantitative and qualitative studies, outlining study design, timeline considerations, potential barriers, and seeking improvement advice. The content emphasizes clarity, specificity, and engagement in a rapid-fire presentation format.

  1. ALERT Instruction Template Purpose of this slide set: • To provide some clarification/instruction for this method of research presentation • To permit some standardization for multiple rapid-fire research presentations. • You will only have 5-8 minutes • Once presented, your ideas will be discussed in depth in a smaller roundtable format • Coaching tips will be in red when needed International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  2. ALERT • Your first decision will be which ALERT template to use PICO or SPIDER. • We suggest the following tips to help you decide: – Is the study idea quantitative? Such as Improving performance of CPR through data tracking. If yes, use PICO – Is it mixed method? Such as Understanding potential sources of bullying in nursing school simulations. E.g. interviews and quantitative. If yes, use SPIDER – Is it qualitative? If yes, use SPIDER If in doubt choose based on which approach “fits” better with your design. 3. ALERT Presentation: Title This starts the actual slides you must fill out Name(s) Institution(s) INSPIRE @ IPSSW 2018 – Amsterdam International Network for Simulation-based Pediatric Innovation, Research and Education

  4. Background/Aims Background This should be short- 2-3 sentences • Add text here Goal/Aim • Add text here Be as specific as you can International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  5. PICO / Quantitative Research Question Note that this is for studies that collect Quantitative information, so data is based • on quantities obtained using a quantifiable measurement process. Examples of this include performance times, or test scores. In contrast, qualitative information focuses on descriptive studies, or studies assessing text or other forms of spoken or written data (e.g. focus groups, open-ended question surveys) Population: Who is being studied med students, nurses? • Intervention: What is being done to the subjects? • Control/Comparison: Are they being compared a nonintervention group? • Outcome(s):How will you measure the results? Test results? • International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  6. SPIDER/ Qualitative/Mixed Methods Research Question Note that this is for studies that collect either qualitative studies that focuses on descriptive • studies, or studies assessing text or other forms of spoken or written data (e.g. focus groups, or open ended survey questions), or mixed methods studies that use both quantitative and qualitative information. Sample: Smaller samples are used in qualitative research, where findings are not intended • to be generalized to the general population. Phenomenon of Interest: Qualitative research examines how and why certain experiences, • behaviors and decisions are occurring (in contrast to effectiveness of an intervention). Design: The study design influences the robustness of the study analysis and findings. • Evaluation: Evaluation outcomes may include more subjective outcomes (such as views, • attitudes, themes, etc.). Research Type: Qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research • International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  7. Approach / Design • Tell us your Study Design This should be very short and sweet. • You will get into the detail of this during the small roundtable session • that is to follow this presentation. INSPIRE members love and cherish these discussions, and will provide excellent feedback Or use flowcharts This is a great approach! International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  8. Timeline (how far are you?) ALERT Presentation The focus here is where are you in the idea creation process, and what you think will happen. • Grant Proposal (if applicable) Needed or not. Where/who? • IRB Submission Let us know where this is. • Recruitment / Data Collection Single site? Already started? • Data Analysis Do your best, you will get really interesting feedback here. • Abstract Presentation • Manuscript Preparation • Or flowcharts International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  9. 3 p0tential barriers to study implementation Now consider the issues you expect to encounter as you implement the study. Who are the stakeholders that may need to buy in? What factors do you anticipate getting in the way of a completed project? 1. Need to obtain local simulation center support? 2. Getting everyone trained on the rating tool? 3. Who can help me with the needed statistics? International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  10. 3 questions to improve study Okay, so you are struggling with the design and there are several questions or concerns from mentors at home. Now you need/want to get some high quality advice! This is your chance to obtain focused feedback to be sure these issues are addressed! 1. Single site or multi-centered? 2. Is this the best method to measure CPR performance or is there something better? 3. Which journal should have the privilege to publish my truly outstanding work? International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  11. Goals to accomplish This is where you get to list specific action items to the INSPIRE community can help you and your team stay on track. In 2 months: At INSPIRE @ IMSH or IPSSW (Year): International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education

  12. Contact Information This is important for folks to contact you after the roundtables or if they are interested in the topic but missed your presentation/discussion Name Institution E-mail, Phone Website / QR Code International Network forSimulation-based PediatricInnovation, Research and Education
