  1. The Role of Engineers 9 Step Engineering Process

  2. Engineers are creative people who use their imaginations and knowledge of math and science to improve human lives.

  3. Step 1 of the Engineering Process Identify a problem or need It may be a problem with an existing product or a wish for a new product.

  4. Step 2 of the Engineering Process Identify design constraints. Constraints: requirements that limit how engineers design their products. (functions, money, time, materials, etc…)

  5. Step 3 of the Engineering Process Gather information necessary to design and build the product. • Research!!!! • Even if someone else has already worked on the problem, and engineer can learn from the mistakes of others or improve on the solution already developed.

  6. Step 4 of the Engineering Process Develop several possible designs Using the research, engineers generate as many ideas as possible for the solution to the design problem.

  7. Step 5 of the Engineering Process Analyze the solutions to determine which will work. Evaluate best ideas to see which will be functional, SAFE, cost-effective, and valuable to customers.

  8. Step 6 of the Engineering Process Choose the best solution based on your analysis. • Engineers must consider all data gathered and the use the data to choose the final design. • How will the product look?

  9. Step 7 of the Engineering Process Build a prototype of the selected design Prototype: a model of the chosen design If the prototype works, testing the product will continue.

  10. Step 8 of the Engineering Process Test the prototype and evaluate its design Engineers work out any problems in the design before it is produced and sold.

  11. Step 9 of the Engineering Process Engineer Process Repeat any or all steps as needed • Refine prototypes. • Redevelop if necessary. • Make sure final product is as good as it can be.
