  2. Objective • I can identify participial phrases. • I can add a participial phrase to my writing.

  3. What do these sentences have in common? • Laughing and screaming, the children ran into the house. • Hands sweating, the witness testified against the murderer. • Still shaking from her scary experience, Monica walked into Ms. Crankmeyer’s classroom too distracted to remember the information for today’s exam.

  4. In the sentences, they all have an active ING verb. • The phrase is then followed by a comma.

  5. Adding Participial Phrases to Writing • You first need to rearrange the verbs in the sentence. • Then you change it to an active ING verb at the beginning of the sentence. • Add a comma after the phrase. • Right after the phrase, you have your subject of the sentence. • To edit sentences to add a participial phrase, you sometimes have to get rid of extra words. • To do this, you need to make sure your SUBJECT and your PREDICATE are next to each other in the sentence. • Words in between are usually extra, and you can delete.

Let’s add a participial phrase. • The boy was sweating and straining as he ran past the other team’s defenders. • Sweating and straining, he ran past the other team’s defenders. • The two girls shrieked as they were reunited after a summer apart. • Shrieking, the two girls were reunited after a summer apart. • Her heart raced as she called out, “Who’s there?” • Heart racing, she called out, “Who’s there?”

Directions: Re-write the following sentences so they contain a participial phrase. • The hissing cat slowly backed away from the dog. • The snake was coiling and rattling as it prepared to strike. • The loudly crying baby screamed for his mother. • The nervous girl was blushing and tripping all over herself as she ran off the stage. • Tommy was glaring daggers as he watched Tricia sashay past holding the hand of her new boyfriend.
