  1. Pronoun Practice I can use intensive pronouns. I can use the correct pronoun.

  2. What is a Pronoun? • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of one or more nouns. • An antecedent is the word or group of words a pronoun replaces. • Example: Mr. Padula works at RCMS. He is the principal. Mr. Padula is the antecedent. He is the pronoun.

  3. Pronoun/Antecedent Agreement A pronoun and the antecedent it is replacing MUST match in number and person (gender). Example: The girl walked down the street, and then suddenly sheturned left. Girlis the antecedent (feminine and singular).Sheis the pronoun (also feminine and singular).

  4. Just say ‘No’ to vague pronouns! The antecedent of a pronoun MUST ALWAYS be clearly identifiable. When a pronoun’s antecedent is vague (unclear/ambiguous), it can cause confusion for readers. Example: The book was in the car, but now it’s gone. Itis the pronoun, but what does it represent? The book or the car? What’s gone, the book or the car?

  5. Intensive Pronouns An Intensive Pronoun is a pronoun that ends in –self or –selves that emphasizes its antecedent. They are NOT essential to the meaning of the sentence. Examples: I, myself, love to read! McKynleeand Milyn, themselves, climbed to the top of the tower. We, ourselves, will go to the store and purchase supplies. Landrick, himself, ate all of the pie. She, herself, moved all of the furniture. The cat, itself, chased the mouse.

  6. Reflexive Pronouns A Reflexive Pronoun also ends in –self or –selves, but reflects back on the antecedent rather than emphasizes it. They are essential to the meaning of the sentence!!! Example: Jack burned himself during the experiment. Himselfis the reflexive pronoun that reflects back on Jack.
