  1. Eastern U.S. Continental Shelf Carbon Budget:Modeling, Data Assimilation, and Analysis Science Team: Hofmann, Friedrichs, McClain,Signorini, Mannino, Haidvogel, Wilkin, Fennel, Sietzinger, Lee, Najjar, Pollard, O’Reilly, Yoder

  2. Goal: develop carbon budgets for the MAB and SAB of the east coast of the United States. • specific research questions: Carbon inputs to MAB and SAB, DOC to DIC conversion, food web pathways that control carbon cycling and fluxes, differences in carbon cycling in MAB and SAB, and sensitivity to climate

  3. Approach • Task 1: Development and implementation of circulation, biogeochemistry, and carbon cycling models for the MAB and SAB • Task 2: Interfacing shelf models with estuarine and climate models • Task 3: Data analysis effort – includes historical in situ measurements and satellite-derived data • Task 4: Limited field measurement effort • Task 5: Implementation of data assimilative models

Action Items from May • Team web site • Modifications to biogeochemical model • Start initial analyses of biogeochemical model results • Begin development of biological model with data assimilation capability • Inventory of existing data sets • Obtain access to Goddard computers • Project Outreach
