February 2019 Maximizing Educational Opportunities for EL Students Leveling the Playing Field: Equity and Assessment
Cultural bias in the classroom Let’s discuss
Linguistic Complexity Simplify! • Short and clear directions • Refrain from using idioms or other figurative language • https://rewordify.com/ is a fabulous tool that removes complex language.
Simplify and Scaffold “Explain clearly using at least 3 different reasons or diagrams why McClelland lost the battle.” can be changed to “Explain why McClelland lost the battle. Give 3 reasons or diagrams.” “Heating water to the boiling point causes evaporation.” vs. “Heating water to the boiling point makes the water evaporate.” The second sentence is simplified by changing “causes” to “makes” and “evaporation” to “to evaporate.” The same concept is conveyed, but in language that is easier to understand. What does the student need to know? What is the desired outcome?
‘Twas brillig, and the slithytoves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the momerathsoutgrabe. “Beware the Jabberwock, my son The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!” He took his vorpal sword in hand; Long time the manxome foe he sought— So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. “And hast thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!” He chortled in his joy. ‘Twas brillig, and the slithytoves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the momerathsoutgrabe. When engaging with students: • Give written and spoken directions • Show as you tell • Monitor for understanding • Use pictures
Use Anchor Charts Use Print – Not Cursive Allow students to use technology to take pictures of text and translate
Assessment Provide word banks Use a variety of language domains Give an open book or note assessment Provide pictures, tables, and diagrams Preview test Make an EL version of study guide and test Let’s look at a few tests
Assessment Convert test question into a statement. Eliminate key terms from the statement. It’s a cloze question. Grade content *Bonus support: Word bank, pictures
