  2. INNOVATION • In 2004, 146 senior executives polled by Christian and Timbers stated that space exploration drives new technology and boost capital markets

  3. ECONOMY • When NASA granted $64 million to businesses who pledged to invest $200 million, over $1.5 billion was created in commercial products

  4. INVESTMENT • NASA receives 7/10ths of 1% of the national budget RETURN ON THE INVESTMENT • In 2007, U.S. space activity contributed $95 Billion in U.S. economic activity (US Space Foundation-2007)

  5. Spin-offs For the past 30 years, NASA technology has developed over 1500 products for commercial use.

  6. IN THE MEDICAL FIELD • Technology developed by NASA includes digital hearing aids, miniature heart pumps, breast cancer screening, balance evaluation, LASIK eye surgery, bone analysis, blood diagnostic equipment, ear thermometer, heart surgery, dental wire, chromosome analysis, prosthesis material, etc.

  12. For Grades K-3….. • Students participated in a presentation introducing them to NASA programs

  13. In the Upper Elementary Classroom …… • Students used pictures taken by the Hubble Telescope of the planets in our solar system and place them in the proper order

  14. In the Middle School …. • Students used satellite images to help locate locations on a regular map and measured distances.

  15. At the High School Level…. • In the technology and health classes, students were shown how astronauts are kept cool during space walks and how space technology is used in battling and curing breast cancer

  16. NEON a professional learning community, open to elementary teachers, STEM teachers, future elementary and STEM teachers, scientists, engineers, and other professionals who want to support STEM teachers in their important work.
