  20. What is a Resume? • Your chance to get attention from a possible employer or business partner! A presentation of your: • previous work history and educational attainment • qualifications/skill sets • compatibility with an advertised vacancy • What do you want to accomplish with your resume? • Create a favorable impression on the recruiter • Types of resume • Chronological list of previous work, starting with your most recent job • Education attainment, with special accomplishments, and useable skills

Using terms easily understood by a layperson Including elaboration on specialized acronyms ASIC - Application Specific Integrated Circuits Concise - free from all elaboration and superfluous detail ex. Highlighting previous academic/work experiences relevant to the position you're applying for Complete - having all necessary elements ex. Having complete contact details Indicating your address, phone, email

The Parts of a Good Resume • Date Listings Put the inclusive dates on the left margin, with your most recent work experience. • Job Data and Description Put relevant numbers and keywords to keep interest   Typical (Boring…): Maintained records for accounts receivable and accounts payable accounts. Exciting (Read Me!!!): Managed over 1,000 accounts receivable and payable accounts, working directly with the Chief Financial Officer.

Typical (Boring…): Gave work assignments to staff of entry level accounting clerks Led the project team to finish the college thesis Exciting (Read Me!!!): Directed workflow, supervised and trained accounting staff performing posting to general ledger, accounts receivable and payable accounts. Planned for and supervised the completion of the college thesis, with a 4-person software team delivering over 5,000 lines of code.

Include: grade, honors, awards, scholarships, achievements, positions/roles in extracurricular activities or organizations, thesis or project. Some Tips for Good Resumes • Maximum of 2 pages when printed. • Include all reasonable means to contact you. • Check for spelling and grammatical errors. • Use simple but powerful business English • Use a guide like Jobstreet’s resume builder • Do not: • Pad or extend your qualifications • Add a bad picture (too boring, too revealing, etc.) • Disclose really “personal” data • Use uncommon acronyms • Use meaningless phrases like “pleasing personality”
