  3. Recruiting 101 • Audience participation • “Give ‘Em What they want!” – Fats Waller • Make Classroom management fun • Bring along performers! • Decide your electric usage and be honest • Phrases to say during recruiting: “Picture yourself…”

  4. Public relations: you can do it too • Video/Youtube • Facebook • Twitter • Local Newspapers • School newspapers

  5. Audience participation • Sing, sing a song • “Fiddle Faddle” • Reel ‘em in • Petting Zoo

  6. Give ‘em what they want • Pop music • Movement • Percussion • Rockstarsinging • Story-Telling - Script

  7. Don’t forget the cool factor! • electric techniques • Wammy pedal • Distortion • Sustain • Reverb • echo • School t-shirts • Have extras for prizes • Let them show off • “autograph signing”

  10. Bring along performers! • Everyone likes free samples • Show your diversity • Give students a role model • All students can have a place in orchestra

  11. Truthful recruiting • Be honest about your program (a.k.a. truth in lending) • Don’t make yourself a lemon by destroying your credibility • Attract the students you want • Make a goal! Tell students how many recruits you need! Keep them posted on their role in it! • Discuss Behavior – what is an orchestra student??? • Are you crazy?!?! ADMIT IT! • What are your pet peeves?

  12. Recruiting through the year • Invite your feeder schools to every concert! • Start an “area orchestra” • Put a soloist on an electric instrument! • Send representatives to your feeder concerts
