  2. Early Ottoman • Orkhan first Sultan of the Ottoman declares jihad against Byzantium • The Balkans is conquered and Muslim rule is imposed • Prior to the 1400’s the Sultans treated those conquered w/ respect

  3. Mongol Tamerlane competes for regional Power • Tamerlane conquered Persia, Russia and the city of Baghdad leaving burned bodies in his wake. • Seen as a conqueror not a governor • Temporary defeat of Ottoman

  4. Mehmed II • Conquered Constantinople in 1453 • Fall of Byzantine • Renamed it Istanbul and allowed people of Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths to practice their religion. • Controlled Greece and the Balkan’s until 1914
