Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (also known as Law of the Sea Treaty) The draft year was from 1973 to 1982 It was signed on December 10, 1982 It was effective on November 16, 1994 The Treaty is an International law which is ratified by 160 states and the European Union The United States signed it, but did not ratify it

Description: • It is a conference to set limits, navigation, archipelagic status and transit regimes, exclusive economic zones, continental shelf jurisdiction, deep seabed mining, the exploitation regime, protection of the marine environment, scientific research, and settlement of disputes • The coastal states are free to regulate their waters 12 nautical miles from the baseline • Vessels are given the right of innocent passage through territorial waters • There is an extra 12 nautical miles where states enforce laws of pollution, taxation, customs, and immigration • 200 nautical miles where coastal nations has sole exploitation rights over all natural resources Environmental Issues: • It solves land disputes
