  2. Hitler’s Motives for Expansion • The future of the Third Reich depended on finding more land. • Bullied Austrian president. • Hitler accused the Czechs of abusing German-speaking people in Sudetenland.

British and French Respond • In beginning, they promised to protect Czechoslavakia. • Hitler promised Sudetenland would be the last territory he would take. • Sept. 30, 1938, Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Pact surrendering Sudetenland to Germany. • “A shameful policy of appeasement.” • “Britain and France were forced to choose between war and dishonor. They chose dishonor.” • Winston Churchill

  4. A Sudeten woman dutifully salutes parading Nazis, October, 1938. The Sudetenland was the portion of Czechoslovakia inhabited by over 3 million Sudeten Germans. Many of them became Nazis and strongly supported the acquisition of the Sudetenland by Hitler.

  5. Hitler’s Offensive in Poland • Hitler uses same tactics to justify his actions – propaganda. • Signs nonaggression pact with Soviet Union, eliminating two-front war. • September 1, 1939, Hitler attacks Poland. (Starts WWII) • Within 3 weeks, Poland falls and WWII begins.
