  2. WHY? • 1. availability of food • 2. proportion of fat in the diet • 3. lack of exercise

  3. Physiological Aspects • Theories • Genetic predisposition – having 1 parent increases your chances to 40%; 2 parents = 80% • Evolution – humans programmed to eat when food is available – now it Is inappropriate

  4. Sociocultural Aspects • From 1976-1994 • 60%increase in weight from decrease in physical activity • 40%due to increase in calories • Lack of physical activity and eating behavior • Owning TVs, computers, videos, Automobiles (people don’t walk)

  5. Overeating IS NOT the main reason for growth in obesity • Since 1997- there has been a change in the kinds of food that we eat • Kind of food eaten has changed • More than 45% of their calories come from high fat foods • Calorie intake increased 25% in most countries but Japan

  6. Fat proportion theory of obesity • Well educated and wealthy people tend to be less obese • They eat healthier foods • Exercise more • Obese people don’t eat more, but they eat more fat and high density food • 45% of energy comes from fat • Fat is more likely to be stored, carbohydrates are burned.

  7. Cognitive factors related to obesity • West – Cultural ideal is the thin body, many women diet on a regular basis • Negative body image and low self-esteem are norm in overweight • West – individualistic so if you are thin, you are in control.

  8. Cognitive Restraint Theory • People replace hunger with restraint • Can lead to obesity!! • When diets go below 800cal/day • Chronic dieters often break diets • Easily respond to smell of food, depression, etc. • False Hope sets in.

  10. CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) • Challenging eating behaviors learn to recognize and adjust destructive habits • Challenging cognitions – improve body image and self-confidence • Long term maintenance – maintain motivation and strengthen coping skills

  11. Dieting • Most lose weight, but the majority _regain_theweight within a few months • Yo-yo dieting - harmful

  12. Drug Treatments • Appetite suppressants – work, but side effects • Surgical treatments • Work, but expensive and invasive!!! • Gastric bypass more successful than gastric banding.
