  4. Extreme Religion • Many different views • According to Liebman (1983) it refers to either a process or an institution • People behaving in a Religiously extreme manner • Three Dimensions of Religious Extremism; • Expansion of Religious Law • Social Isolation • Cultural Rejection 4 4

  5. Extreme Religion Cont. • Religion and Psychology (Saba 2010) • Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Gordon Allport, and Erik Erikson • State of mind causes brutal acts • According to Jung, this can be viewed as the “collective unconscious” • “Gods Warrior” is used to express the extremist psyche 5 5

  7. The DSM • Religion taken to the extreme • Should be placed in the DSM because of; • 1) Hallucinations • 2) Delusions • 3) Denial/inability to learn • 4) Inability to distinguish fantasy from reality • 5) Paranoia • 6) Emotional abuse • 7) Violence 7

Westboro Baptist Church • Established in 1955 by Pastor Fred Phelps • An “Old School” Baptist Church in Kansas • Website is www.godhatesfags.com • Adhere to teachings of the Bible, and preach against all forms of sin • Engage in what they call “peaceful” sidewalk demonstrations (Pickets) • GOD HATES FAGS, AIDS CURE FAGS, THANK GOD FOR DEAD SOLDIERS, GOD BLEW UP THE TROOPS, etc. • June 26, 2003, supreme court ruled that WBC must be more respectful, but they continue to picket all over United States and Canada 17 16
