Sourav Ganguly, fondly known as Dada, is a former Indian cricketer and captain of the Indian cricket team. He was born on July 8, 1972, in Kolkata, India. He is widely regarded as one of India's most successful captains, known for his aggressive leadership and his ability to bring out the best in his team. Ganguly's cricket career began in his early childhood. He started playing cricket with a plastic bat at the age of three. He went on to represent his school team, St. Xavier's School, in Kolkata. His first big break came when he was selected to play for the Bengal Ranji Trophy team at the age of 18. Ganguly's international debut came in 1992 when he was selected to play in a one- day international match against the West Indies. However, he did not get an extended run in the national team and had to wait for almost four years to make his Test debut. Ganguly's career took off in 1996 when he was selected for the tour of England. He scored a century on his debut at Lord's, becoming only the third player to achieve the feat. Ganguly's Test career took off from there, and he went on to score over 7,000 runs in 113 Tests, including 16 centuries and 35 half-centuries. Ganguly was appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team in 2000, and it marked a turning point in Indian cricket. He led the team to a famous Test series win against Australia in 2001, ending Australia's record-breaking 16-match winning streak. Ganguly also led India to the final of the 2003 Cricket World Cup, where they lost to Australia. Ganguly was known for his aggressive leadership style, and he was not afraid to take risks. He was responsible for bringing in new talents like Yuvraj Singh, Zaheer Khan, and Harbhajan Singh into the Indian cricket team, who went on to become key players for India. Ganguly retired from international cricket in 2008, and his contribution to Indian cricket was recognized when he was appointed as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2019. Ganguly's impact on Indian cricket can be seen in the success of the Indian cricket team today. He laid the foundation for a new generation of cricketers, who have taken Indian
cricket to new heights. His contribution to Indian cricket will always be remembered, and he will remain a legend of the game.
