He was the second of five siblings. His father, Anand Singh Bisht, was a forest ranger. Yogi Adityanath was inclined towards spirituality from a young age. At the age of 21, he renounced his family and became a disciple of Mahant Avaidyanath, the head priest of the Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was given the name Yogi Adityanath by his guru. As a disciple, Yogi Adityanath spent several years learning about Hindu philosophy and practicing yoga and meditation.
