The Ten Oxherding Pictures

1. Undisciplined

With his horns fiercely projected in the air the beast snorts,

Madly running over the mountain paths, farther and farther he goes astray!

A dark cloud is spread across the entrance of the valley,

And who knows how much of the fine fresh herb is trampled under his wild hoofs!

slide41

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

2. Discipline Begun

I am in possession of a straw rope, and I pass it through his nose,For once he makes a frantic attempt to run away, but he is severely whipped and whipped; The beast resists the training with all the power there is in a nature wild and ungoverned,But the rustic oxherd never relaxes his pulling tether and ever-ready whip.

slide42

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

3. In Harness

Gradually getting into harness the beast is now content to be led by the nose,Crossing the stream, walking along the mountain path, he follows every step of the leader; The leader holds the rope tightly in his hand never letting it go,All day long he is on the alert almost unconscious of what fatigue is.

slide43

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

4. Faced Round

After long days of training the result begins to tell and the beast is faced round,A nature so wild and ungoverned is finally broken, he has become gentler; But the tender has not yet given him his full confidence,He still keeps his straw rope with which the ox is now tied to a tree.

slide44

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

5. Tamed

Under the green willow tree and by the ancient mountain stream,The ox is set at liberty to pursue his own pleasures; At the eventide when a grey mist descends on the pasture,The boy wends his homeward way with the animal quietly following.

slide45

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

6. Unimpeded

On the verdant field the beast contentedly lies idling his time away,No whip is needed now, nor any kind of restraint; The boy too sits leisurely under the pine tree,Playing a tune of peace, overflowing with joy.

slide46

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

7. Laissez Faire

The spring stream in the evening sun flows languidly along the willow-lined bank,In the hazy atmosphere the meadow grass is seen growing thick; When hungry he grazes, when thirsty he quaffs, as time sweetly slides,While the boy on the rock dozes for hours not noticing anything that goes on about him.

slide47

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

8. All Forgotten

The beast all in white now is surrounded by the white clouds,The man is perfectly at his case and care-free, so is his companion; The white clouds penetrated by the moon-light cast their white shadows below,The white clouds and the bright moon-light-each following its course of movement.

slide48

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

9. The Solitary Moon

Nowhere is the beast, and the oxherd is master of his time,He is a solitary cloud wafting lightly along the mountain peaks;Clapping his hands he sings joyfully in the moon-light,But remember a last wall is still left barring his homeward walk.

slide49

The Ten Oxherding Pictures

10. Both Vanished

Both the man and the animal have disappeared, no traces are left,The bright moon-light is empty and shadowless with all the ten-thousand objects in it;If anyone should ask the meaning of this,Behold the lilies of the field and its fresh sweet-scented verdure.

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever can. Margaret Mead

The astounding and disruptive powers bequeathed to us by progress are too great to remain unused, if they do not in fact have a little life and energy of their own. The press of everyday affairs will thus require that we take a stand on our present mood—either by learning how to live safely with nothing much to do, or else by getting over the loss we have sustained and then proceeding resolutely with what is yet to be done. Melzer, Weinberger, and Zinman

slide55

(Aburdene) –

(Vaclav Havel) -
slide56

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

slide59

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

Without actions which involve individual citizens, our society cannot meet the global challenges in ways which promote the ideas of social progress and human well-being. Eventually, each person must take action to pursue Humanistic Globalization. Without changing individual actions, nothing will happen. I propose the following canons for individuals. These canons are based on the concept of critical optimism for dynamic transformation

Eventually, each person must take action to pursue Humanistic Globalization. Without changing individual actions, nothing will happen. I propose the following canons for individuals. These canons are based on the concept of critical optimism for dynamic transformation

slide62

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

• First, we should be critical about the obstacles. But, at the same time, we should be able to maintain an optimistic attitude about our ability to navigate our society toward the desirable destination. This is the philosophy of critical optimism for dynamic change. We need to combine critical analysis and optimistic behavior.

• Second, we should continue our learning. Learn about other cultures and ways of thinking. Learn more foreign languages. Read the great books and cartoons of our own and other cultures. Learn from people around us, and never stop emancipating ourselves through increased knowledge. Renew ourselves everyday.

• Third, we need to educate people around us--our parents, our children, our friends, and even our teachers. In particular, we have to educate those who adhere to old habits and resist altering the courses of action in this time of profound change. Education is a beginning of reform.

slide63

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

• Fourth, we must actively participate in voluntary services and the process of public decision-making. Speak, write, vote, organize, and engage in real actions and critical discourse. In doing so, we should remember that the objective of our participation is to obtain win/win situations or consensus building, but not to simply elevate conflicts.

• Fifth, we should work for a shift in priorities of public investment decisions. Our public decision criteria should include the basic human values of love, peace, justice, equality, liberty, affluence and trust. We have to support the idea of investing more in civil security. We need to put more resources in basic food security, housing, health and education. In the area of education, we need to invest more in programs dealing with global concerns and women and children.

slide64

Cannons of Humanistic Globalization

• Sixth, we must respect each other. Show our respect to every human being, whether he or she is somebody you know or not, weak or strong, powerless or powerful, poor or rich, and ignorant or knowledgeable.

• Finally, we should make friends with people who are different from us in terms of country of origin, culture, ethnicity, and philosophy. By making friends with somebody whom we thought we never could or would, we will learn, to our surprise, that we share much in common--basic human values such as love, peace, justice, equality, liberty, affluence and trust--the real building blocks of a civil society. This is the best and, most pleasant approach to achieve Humanistic Globalization.
