  1. Do Now Underline your supporting details in your individual speeches.

  2. Beginning and Ending a Speech Today we will focus on how to introduce and conclude a speech.

  3. Before we begin • What is your specific purpose? • Example on the topic of Cat Obesity: To inform my audience about the issue of Cat Obesity.

  4. Components of a Introduction • Attention Getters • Tie to the Audience • Credibility • Preview of topics to come

  5. Attention Getters How will you get the audiences attention? Suggestions: • Questions • Story • Joke • A current reference (pop culture, news etc.) Ex on Cat Obesity: How many of you own cats? Or J: What do English cats drink at high noon? A: Kit-tea (haha)

  6. Credibility • How will you earn the Audience’s trust in what you are saying? • Do you have experience with this issue? • What sources have you collected information from? Ex on Cat Obesity: As a cat owner, I know how hard it is to help maintain the healthy weight and diet of an indoor cat.

  7. Tie to the Audience • Why is this relevant to you Audience ? (Look back at your homework handout from 2/24) Suggestions: • An interesting fact • Something alarming or interesting • Be creative here! Ex for Cat Obesity: Do you find diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney failure cute or funny? Then why think fat cats are cute and funny?

  8. Preview of Topics to Come. • What will we hear from you ? • Give the order of your information. Ex: Today I will be addressing the growing issue of Feline Obesity. Through this speech I will be explaining the causes of feline obesity, health problems associated with feline obesity , and finally addressing the current methods of cat weight loss being used to remedy this issue.

  9. Putting it all together • Ex on Cat Obesity: Hello everyone! Any cat owners in the audience? Who thinks fat cats are funny? My name is Ms. Peskett and I am here to tell you about the growing issue of feline obesity. As a indoor cat owner, I know too the struggles of trying to help your cats maintain a healthy weight. Before we begin to explore this important information about cats I just want to ask you one thing: Do you find diabetes, cardiovascular disease and kidney failure funny? If you said "no” to this question , you may want to reconsider how funny you think fat cats are. Through this speech I will be explaining the causes of feline obesity, health problems associated with feline obesity , and finally addressing the current methods of cat weight loss being used to remedy this issue .

  10. In your groups, work together to write the introduction. Make sure that you have: • An attention getter • Credibility • Tie to the Audience • Preview of topics to come.

  11. Transitioning From One Speaker to Another • Transition sentences help to connect the next speaker so that they can change the focus of the speech. • Linking one speaker to the next. Ex: According to webMD.com “the main reason for feline obesity is the consumption of too much food”(2010). We cannot blame our pets for over eating because domestic cats do not feed themselves. Much of this issue can be attributed to the feeding habits assisted by the pet owner. Cats are carnivores and need much more protein then is offered to them by humans. Many pet owners are led to believe that their salmon flavored kibble is a well balanced diet for their cat, but research suggests differently.

  12. Your turn • Start putting together your speeches! Figure out how you can create a transition for each of your separate speech parts.

  13. Conclusions Conclusion are the way we wrap-up a speech. They include: • Final Review • Tie back to the audience • Final thoughts

  14. Finale Review. • Revisit the “Preview of Topics” to recap all that you have discussed. • Ex: Today we have discussed the causes of feline obesity, health problems caused by feline obesity, and how we can help to keep our cats fit.

  15. Tie back to Audience • You have to draw the audience back . • Ex: Not so cute or funny now huh? After learning how harmful extra weight can be on our feline companions, I hope you’ll be able to recognize a cat in need of diet and exercise. Our nations feline’s need our help!

  16. Final Thoughts • Leave an impression! • How can you get your audience to think about this beyond the speech? • Ex : Now that you know all about feline obesity, help a cat or cat owner you know to become informed. You could be saving a life.
