What are Hydroxides? Explain its properties.

Hydroxide is a diatomic anion with chemical formula OH(-). It is a negatively charged molecule made up of one oxygen bonded to one Hydrogen. It is a powerful chemical with potentially dangereous properties. Chemicals containing Hydroxides can be very corrosive and sometimes very dangerous too. Learn some interesting facts about Hydroxides from this document shared by Tatvachintan. Tatvachintan is a leading raw material supplier for various pharmaceuticals company all over India & abroad.

  1. Hydroxide - Things that you should know Development and innovations in the pharma industries has taken a giant leap within the last few years. The market today is flooded with the most suitable and advanced medicines. This advancement in this field has made life easier and comforting for society. One of the major and prominent contributor to this industry is Hydroxide. What is Hydroxide? Simply saying, Hydroxide, any chemical compound containing one or more groups, each comprising one atom each of oxygen and hydrogen bonded together and functioning as the negatively charged ion OH-. The positively charged portion is usually the ion of a metal (aluminium, magnesium or sodium). Although mostly it is the ion of a metal but it can be of an organic group (tetramethylammonium or guanidinium) as well. To avoid confusion it is always preferable to characterize the presence of the un-ionized, hydroxyl group OH which is covalently bonded by the prefix hydroxy. The example could be the organic compound hydroxyacetic acid which is denoted as CH3OH. In a similar way the combination compounds can be added with a prefix hydroxo as in the case of potassium tetrahydroxoaurate which is referred as Kau(OH)4. Metal hydroxide are also popularly known as strong bases. You might not be aware that many common metal hydroxides contain hydroxide ions. These ions are basically of the metal of which they are made of. For instance, sodium hydroxide(NaOH) dissolves in water to form OH ions and

  2. Hydroxide - Things that you should know Na ions. Because of their ability to ionize completely while dissolving, Metal hydroxides are known as strong bases. With a pH level of above 7, metal hydroxides are absolute bases. Ions coming out of metal and metal being good conductor of electricity, metal hydroxides ions carry electricity when they are dissolved. After understanding the basic combination and properties of hydroxides, it's time to know their utility as well. Hydroxides are of immense use and their utility is not limited to a specific field. Some of the various ways in which they can be used are:  It can be used in manufacturing processes of various items like textiles, plastics, soaps, etc.  It can be utilized as a revitalizing acid in the process of petroleum refining.  It also finds a place in the paper manufacturing process.  It can be used in relaxers to help in straightening hair but since there is a possibility of chemical burn, it is losing its utility here.  It can also be instrumental in the condensation reactions and base-catalyzed dehydration reactions.  It is also used in packaging in the form of Diethyldimethylammonium Hydroxide. Tatva Chintan Pharma Chem Pvt.
