  1. Gendering Desistance Wednesday 4th December 2013 • Background • Desistance is a relatively new but growing area of academic interest. Research into desistance has tended to focus on the experiences of persistent male offenders, particularly those who commit volume crimes such as robbery or burglary. While recent studies have acknowledged gender as a variable, they rarely explore the gendered nature of an offender's life course or criminal career. As a result, little is known about women offenders or of the masculinities of men who commit violence against women. • This half day seminar explores importance of adopting a 'gendered' lens through which to examine desistance and considers the potential benefits to policy and practice of adopting a more critical frame. The seminar provides an opportunity to build a conceptual bridge for both theoretical and practice based work. It also provides a forum within which Academics and Practitioners can establish a dialogue on current and future research, policy and practice agendas. The conference is free and will include a conference lunch, tea and coffee. • Themes explored include: • The importance of adopting a 'gendered' lens in considering desistance • The role of gender in understanding the desistance of male perpetrators of violence against women • Gendered desistance in the narratives of women exiting prostitution • Exploring desistance in practice: lessons from women's centres/ services
