  4. Since then, this event is celebrated every year. The festival is now 17 days when the first Sunday is October 2 and 18 days when it is October 1. In 2010, the festival lasts until the first Monday in October, to mark the 200-year anniversary of the event. It is located very central on the Thereisienwiese, a huge, flat area near important Bavarian statues.

  13. Dionysia

  14. The Dionysia was a large festival in ancient Athens in honor of the god Dionysus, the central event of which was the performance of tragedies and comedies. It was the second-most important festival after the Panathenaia. The Dionysia actually comprised two related festivals, the Rural Dionysia and the City Dionysia, which took place in different parts of the year. They were also an essential part of the Dionysian Mysteries.

  15. The central event was the pompe, in which men that were called phalloi were carried by phallophoroi. There were also young girls carrying baskets, long loaves of bread, jars of water and wine.

  16. After the pompe, there were contests of dancing and singing. Some festivals may have included dramatic performances, possibly of the tragedies and comedies that had been produced at the City Dionysia the previous year. This was more common in the larger towns such as Piraeus and Eleusis.

  17. The comic playwright Aristophanes parodied the Rural Dionysia in his play The Acharnians. • Because the various towns in Attica held their festivals on different days, it was possible for spectators to visit more than one festival per season. It was also an opportunity for Athenian citizens to travel outside the city if they did not have the opportunity to do so during the rest of the year. This also allowed travelling companies of actors to perform in more than one town during the period of the festival.

  18. Strangely, “Dionysia” are still held in the whole Greece and are dedicated to the god Dionysus. • Nowadays, this event lasts between 3 and 5 days but the try to celebrate it like then so music, dance and songs are necessary!
