  1. 5 Themes Of Geography

  2. 5 Themes created in 1984 give geographers a framework for the teaching of geography • Location • Place a) Physical characteristics b) Human characteristics • Human/Environmental interaction • Movement • Regions

  3. Location • Where in the world is something located? • Relative or Absolute • Relative: Victoria B.C. is at the southeast tip of Vancouver Island. • Absolute: the exact global position of Victoria in latitude and longitude (You house address is the absolute location of where you live)

  4. Place • What is the place like? • Every place has its own unique characteristics. • Human and physical human characteristics are included • Physical characteristics: landforms, vegetation, water, soil, climate and the animals that inhabit a place • Human characteristics: includes what people have done to change the place by building homes and making a living

  5. Human and Environmental Interaction • People have to modify their living based on the challenges of the physical environment • Some examples are: • build shelters, divert water to or from our homes, build structures to control the flood waters of rivers, treat sewage…etc

  6. Movement • The world is Flat • Resources and trade • Animals and people migrate to find food/survive • Birds/fish fly or salmon • Wind patterns, ocean currents and tides, tectonic plates lava flows glaciers make our planet active

  7. Regions Physical Geography: mountain ranges, biomes deserts or rainforests Agricultural regions are often defined by a specific crop eg)Wheat belt Helps geographers to better understand how humans have adapted to living in varied conditions around the world

  8. Planetary Spheres • Lithosphere- Earth’s outer layer it includes the top part of the mantle and all of the crust 100 km thick. • Hydrosphere – All water in all forms, solid, liquid gas on eather • Atmosphere- thin layer of odourless colourless tasteless gases surrounding the earth. • Biosphere- Outer thin layer below, on and above the Earth’s surface where life forms exist “Life Layer” includes all living things

  9. Activity# 1 Make a page diagram representing the 4 major spheres- /5 a)Identify each sphere b) List Its characteristics c)How each sphere can beconnected? (1 sentence) B)Think of one influence humans have on each sphere.

  10. Biosphere • As a system- • Sustains life • Gases present in the atmosphere, minerals in lithosphere and water in Hydrosphere all interact to make life in Biosphere • Complex planetary ecosystem • Ecosystems are resilient and fragile • Everything is connected Take a look at the handout

  11. Read pages 115-117 • Draw a picture to illustrate the relationship between Biotic and Abiotic relationships • How is an ecosystem and the 4spheres alike? • What human interaction could create a problem with the carbon cycle? And what sphere would be effected?

  12. BiosphereBiomes • After reading chapter 30-35 you will create an Awareness pamphlet about how humans have a damaging influence on our atmosphere. • You will work on your own • Choose a Biome:30-37 • What are the characteristics of that place? • How is the vegetation and soil of the area? • What human interaction could be a problem in this area? How might it effect other areas?

  13. Assignment #5 Biomes • There is a world map on page 119 showing the different biomes of the world. You will read pg119-139 and you will be assigned a region/biome- • Your pamphlet must have: • Outline the Characteristics of your assigned region • Include vegetation- what and how it has adapted to the climate. • Describe the climate- characteristics and issues or problems. • Describe its soil and its characteristics. • You will have to analyze the interaction between human activity within the Biomes with reference to Deforestation, desertification soil degradation and species depletion.

  14. Next class You will present and hand out your pamphlet about your biome (less than 5min presentation to your group members. • The rest of your group members will take notes and evaluate you on your presentation. • Everyone will be responsible to read 119-139 to be sure they understand all the material. • Once all presentations and pamphlets cover every Biome- you will do Unit 4 questions • I will do a review to prepare you for the test.

  15. Your test is on Tuesday • - you will have pamphlets on each biome • - you will have a review. Q15& practice questions • - you will have the Q & A 1-14 • - you will have read and reviewed the pages 119-139
