  2. What is Geography? The study of both physical geography (including climate, landscapes, and oceans) and human geography (including culture, communities and transportation).

  3. IN PLAIN ENGLISH Geography is the study of the earth and everything on it.

  5. WHERE DID THE 5 THEMES COME FROM? The 5 Themes of Geography originated by the National Geographic Society to fulfill a need for geographers (people who study the earth and everything on it) to categorize everything they learn. These 5 themes are easy to remember. Just say the word “PRILM”.

  6. WHAT IS “PRILM”? PRILM is a mnemonic device that can be used to help remember what the 5 Themes of Geography are. Simply put, take the first letter of each Theme to create the word PRILM. They are: • Place • Region • Interaction (Human-Environment) • Location • Movement

  7. PLACE What is it like? How does the landscape affect us? Physical Characteristics Landforms (mountains, rivers, etc.), Bodies of water (oceans, lakes, bay, etc) Ecosystems (vegetation, wildlife, soil, climate) etc. • Human/Cultural Characteristics • languages, customs, and beliefs, bridges, roads, buildings • How many people live, work, and visit a place?

REGIONS • How are Regions similar to and different from other places? • Formal Regions • Regions defined by governmental or administrative boundaries (States, Countries, Cities) • Functional Regions • Regions defined by a function (newspaper service area, cell phone coverage area). • Perceptual Regions • Regions defined by similar characteristics (Corn Belt, Rocky Mountain region, Chinatown).

HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION • How do humans and the environment affect each other? • We depend on it. • People depend on the St. Lawrence River for water and transportation. • We modify/change it. • People modify our environment by heating and cooling buildings for comfort. • We adapt to it. • We adapt to the environment by wearing clothing suitable for summer (shorts) and winter (coats), rain and shine.

LOCATIONWhere are we? • Absolute Location • Is given in degrees of latitude and longitude (global location) or a street address (local location). • Paris France is 48o North Latitude and 2o East Longitude. • The White House is located at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. • Relative Location • Described by landmarks, time, direction or distance. From one place to another. • Go 1 mile west on main street and turn left for 1 block. You are Here

  14. MOVEMENT • How are people, goods, ideas moved from place to place? • Human Movement • Trucks, Trains, Planes • Information Movement • Phones, computer (email), mail • Idea Movement • How do fads move from place to place? TV, Radio, Magazines

Include place names and direction. • 2. Use the photo to record the following information about this place: • a) its physical features • b) its human-made features • c) evidence of geography’s movement theme • 3. Describe the physical and human characteristics that make this place both • unique and popular with tourists. • 4. Construct a Venn diagram to compare this place to your own community.
