Archduke Franz Ferdinand On June 28, 1914, while traveling on a formal visit to Sarajevo with his wife Sophie, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, after surviving an assassination attempt earlier that day, rode in a car with his wife when a Serb nationalist named GavriloPrincipshot him along with his wife. Austria believed that Serbia’s government had something to do with it so they wanted to go to war, but Russia was Serbia’s ally and Austria didn’t want to lose. Germany, Austria’s ally, said they would help defend Austria from Russia and told them to go ahead with the war.

  5. Germany Declares War on Russia August 1, 1914, Germany declares war on Russia and asks that France (one of Russia’s allies) stay out of it. France refuses.

  6. Belgium Invaded August 3, 1914 Belgium is invaded by Germany, who has declared war on France, and Britain declares war on Germany the next day.

  7. Germany Invades France On August 18, 1914, Germany had overrun Belgium and began to gather around the French border. Two days later they attacked and French citizens were driven out of the city Lorraine.

  8. Battle of Namur and Mons On the 23 of August, 1914, the Germans won the battle of Namur against the French. On the 24 of August, the Germans also won the battle of Mons against the British.

  9. Battle of Marne September 12, 1914, The battle of Marne ended with the Allies winning and Germany losing. This cracked Germany’s plan to win the war.

  10. Trench and Gas Warfare Throughout the war trenches were dug to serve as protection for shooters these didn’t help much though when the Germans began to use poisonous gases. The most effective of them was mustard gas, which was created in July of 1917.

  11. Kaiser Abdicates November 9, 1918, the German emperor abdicated his throne because of how bad his country had become with little food and money.

  12. Armistice On November 11, 1918, after the German commander, Eric Ludendorff, resigned and Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicated, two leaders met Ferdinand Foch's railway carriage HQ in Compiegne. A treaty was signed and went into effect five hours later.

  13. Treaty of Versailles June 28, 1919, the Treaty of Versailles is signed by German and Ally forces.
