  1. Presentation for 2nd YearsPlanning your Year Abroad October

  2. Today’s programme • Introductory talk by Exchange Coordinator • The School Exchange team • Presentation from International Office • Student perspective on the Year Abroad • Exchanges Fair, a chance to meet students who are visiting here from their home universities – Visit the Stands! Find out more!

  3. Introductory Talk • First Year Exam Results • To go abroad outside the EU you need a first year average of 60+ ie a B, may be possible with a 58, it depends on the mark distribution. • For EU exchanges then you need a minimum of a 54 average. • For averages less than this we recommend that you do not go abroad but if your December exams produce a 60+ average then we can review your case.

  4. Introductory Talk • Second Year Exam Results • Your December results will be available in early February and any resits will be in August. • Your second year exam results from the April/May diet will be available following the Board of Examiners' meetings in June. • You must pass all your courses at the first attempt and meet the requirements for progression into Honours.

  5. Introductory Talk If you have a resit in August there is a strong likelihood that you will be unable to spend your third year abroad. The only destinations that are available after the resit results are known are EU destinations. Some insurance companies provide cover for you if your year abroad/flights etc. have to be cancelled as a result of an August resit.

  6. Introductory Talk During your year abroad you must complete and pass the required number of courses. The minimum number of courses will vary between universities but you should choose appropriate courses equivalent to one full year of academic study (60 ECTS in Europe). This could be anything from 3 courses per semester to 6 courses.

  7. Introductory Talk For students on joint degrees you may have compulsory courses - your other subject area will explain what these are – but do ask them! For more information on choice of courses, please refer to the host university's website.

  8. Introductory Talk To Summarise: In terms of workload, the year abroad will be similar to what is expected at the University of Edinburgh in third year (120 credits) and what is expected of students at the partner university. It is expected that you will sit and pass all examinations for your courses at the partner institution. If you pass all your courses then Edinburgh will give you the equivalent course credit for this and your honours degree will be classified only on your fourth year performance at Edinburgh.

  9. Introductory Talk If a European language is a component of your degree programme then we normally expect that all of your courses will be studied and assessed in the local language. However, some institutions will offer courses that are available in English and where this is the case no more than 40 per cent (by credit weighting) of your courses can be undertaken in English.

  10. Issues to consider • Courses and assessment • Style of learning • Language • Accommodation • Cost of Living • Climate • Travel Opportunities • Term Times • Ambassadorial Role

  11. Application deadline • Friday 29 November 2013 • Application Forms, listing your three choices, to be submitted online via the International Office’s webpages: www.ed.ac.uk/student-exchanges

  12. Future event • Once you all have confirmed your destinations for your year abroad then we will be holding a pre-departure briefing in March: • Thursday 21st March 2013 • 1700-1900 hrs • Teviot Dining Hall • This event is compulsory for all students who are going abroad.
