  1. Q.V (A) Rapid Reading Read the following extract carefully and rewrite it from the point of view of the writer’s mother. You may begin with −− ‘I was still managing Green’s….’ Change in Narrative Technique (4 Marks) My mother was still managing Green’s, even though its days were numbered. The day after my return I joined her in the small office, where she sat behind her over-large desk, telephone on her right and the latest paperback western before her, ready to be taken up when nothing much was happening− which was fairly often. My mother enjoyed reading westerns−particularly Luke Short, Max Brand, and Clarence E Mulford− much in the same way that I enjoyed detective fiction. Both genres were freely available in cheap Collins ‘White Circle’ editions published during and just after the War.

My son joined me in my office the day after he returned from his boarding school.I noticed him observing the books on my desk – Luke Short, Max Brand, and Clarence E. Mulford. I loved westerns, in the same way that he liked detective fiction. Both genres were freely available in cheap Collins ‘White Circle’ editions published during and just after the war. You see, we were out carol-singing, and−Dentist : Oh, so it was you who were making that horrible din outside?George : Yes−that was Ginger’s idea −but, you see, it was raining rather hard and these fellows were afraid of getting wet, so−Tom : (interrupting). Young Alfie’s got his best suit on, otherwise we shouldn’t have been afraid of getting wet. Expected Answer: Q.V. (B2) Rapid Reading When the Dentist found the strange boys in hi house he was shocked. He cried, “Who are you and what are you doing in my house?” Tom fumbled for words, “I say−I’m awfully sorry−but we thought you were a ghost.” The Dentist got shocked. Bewildered he said, ”A ghost! Why on earth should you think I was a ghost?” George walked across the corner began to plead, ”I’m awfully sorry, sir…………………

At that moment, I fully understood another lesson Mr. Kaplan had taught us: I had the power to change and the ability to affect others. Expected Answer: I began to feel excited that I was going to do something I had never thought of. Slowly Mr. Kaplan appeared in the window. He waived his hand to all of us and sais, “ I’m proud of you my children. Now you all have grown up.” the crowd began to cry, “Mr. Kaplan! Mr. Kaplan!” He became rather serious and calmed us all. He began in a serious tone, “See, all of you have now really grown up……..
