  1. METEOROLOGY Chapter 6 Objective 6-3

  2. Objective • Objective 6-3 • Interpret a weather map and use it to give current conditions.

  3. Forecasting Methods • Persistence Method • Current conditions will continue in the future. • Works for areas and times when there is little change in the weather. • Trend Method • Systems will move at constant speeds. • A thunderstorm that is 60 miles W and moving to the E at 20 mph will arrive here in 3 hours.

  4. Forecasting Methods • Climatology Method • Use the averages for the current day collected over a number of years to predict today’s weather. • More accurate when weather is “typical”. • More accurate when more records are available.

  5. Forecasting Methods • Analog Method • Find a day in the past when conditions for your location were similar to today’s conditions. • Predict that the same thing will happen. • It is difficult to find the exact same conditions in a previous situation.

  6. Forecasting Methods • Numerical Weather Prediction • Uses supercomputers and complex mathematical models to predict future conditions. • Models are not precise and initial information is not complete. • Most accurate method.
